Forget those Others. In Wednesday's episode, "Lost" turned its attention back to the castaways' community and addressed what happened when the hatch imploded.
Here's a refresher: Last season, John Locke (Terry O' Quinn), Mr. Eko (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) were all in the hatch when Desmond turned the fail-safe key to diffuse the electromagnetic energy that was rocking the island. An implosion ensued — try surviving that.
(Don't read further unless you want to know what happened Wednesday.)
Well, they did survive. Locke awoke in some brush and grabbed a walking stick — Mr. Eko's? — that appeared to fall from the sky. It was etched with the cryptic line, "Lift up your eyes and look north." Charlie (Dominic Monaghan) happened by and Locke, rendered temporarily mute, enlisted his help (through hand-gesturing and note-writing) to stand guard outside a tent while he meditated alone.
Inside the tent, Locke had a vision in one of the show's most thrilling moments. Boone (Ian Somerhalder), who died in the first season while helping Locke look for the hatch, made a cameo, popping up beside a speechless Locke.
"Don't worry, you'll speak when you have something worth saying," he told his former father figure. "I'm here to help you find your way again. So you can bring the family back together."
The vision continued as Boone pushed a wheelchair-bound Locke through an airport scattered with familiar faces. "Someone in this airport's in serious danger," he said. "You are the only one who can save them."
Locke pointed at Charlie, Claire (Emilie de Ravin) and her baby. "Not them," Boone said. "They'll be fine for awhile."
Uh, okay. Then Locke spotted Sun (Yunjin Kim), Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) and Sayid (Naveen Andrews). "I think Sayid's got it," Boone said.
The victim isn't Hurley (Jorge Garcia), said Boone, who also warned not to bother with Desmond, who's "helping himself."
In another part of the airport, Kate (Evangeline Lilly) and Sawyer (Josh Holloway) chatted happily. Jack (Matthew Fox) went through a security gate manned by Ben (Michael Emerson).
Boone said: "There's nothing you can do for them. Not yet. First, you have to clean up your own mess."
Back to reality: Locke, emboldened by a new purpose, regained his speech. "I'm going to save Mr. Eko's life," he told Charlie.
Locke and Charlie walk through the jungle, where Locke has a weird hunch that Eko was attacked by a polar bear. He warned Charlie not to tag along. "Bad things happen to people who hang out with me," he said.
In a series of flashbacks, it was revealed that Locke resided in a close-knit commune whose members grew marijuana in a greenhouse. Locke picked up a hitchhiker, Eddie, one day, who turned out to be an undercover cop. An angry Locke set out to kill Eddie, but didn't pull the trigger.
Back in the present: A killer polar bear was, in fact, on the hunt and chased Locke and Charlie in the jungle. Locke followed his instincts and rescued Eko in a cave, where the African priest was dragged by the bear. The Cujo-like creature ran away after Locke burned its face by aiming hairspray through the flame atop his torch.
Hurley, meanwhile, found Desmond naked in the jungle and gave him a T-shirt to wear. Desmond surprised Hurley by breaking the news that Locke would try to save Jack, Kate and Sawyer. "He said so in his speech," Desmond said.
"All he said was he was going to save Eko and kill bears," said Hurley, who ran into Locke earlier in the episode.
Back at camp, Locke ended up making such a speech after Eko gave him a pep talk. "I'm gonna find our friends," he said.
Yeah, somehow Desmond knew that already. Did the hatch implosion give him psychic powers?
