Eick on Season Three story, Caprica spin-off

THURSDAY - MAY 25, 2006

by Livi Dolgin

Battlestar Galactica's new season is full of surprises, according to executive producer David Eick. In an interview with iF Magazine, Eick gives fans insight into the conception and direction of Season Three and the new potential spin-off series, Caprica (story).

Eick revealed that the producers are taking the show in a new direction to try and capture a broader audience for SCI FI Channel. "The audiences, who haven't found the show and might like show, are the ones who have been kept at bay by the title or based on the network that we are on," he said. "These are the audiences I am trying to get to, and they're the ones who watch Sopranos, Nip/Tuck, ER, and West Wing. An audience that likes that kind of drama would like our show and watch it."

The evolution of the Cylons will be the driving theme of Season Three. According to Eick, "There is a general sense of a biomechanical history behind the Cylons, and there are various ideas and tangents that can spin from that principle. We will continue to investigate new Cylon forms."

The motivations and modus operandi will evolve as well presenting new challenges for the human refugees. Because the Cylons regenerate, killing them does not have the same repercussions, which gives the show a twist.

"They are going to have reevaluate certain judgments in their approach to humanity," Eick told the magazine. "One of the interesting things about the Cylon culture is it is difficult to hold grudges, even for something as extreme as braining someone with a giant rock, because you can't kill them. In fact, killing someone is not the worst thing you can do, because Cylons regenerate. It all has to be considered in a different way; it's not a 'Godfather' movie where if you kill someone it's a cardinal sin that starts wars."

Fans can look forward to the return of Lucy Lawless (D'Anna Biers) and Dean Stockwell (Brother Cavil) in Season Three. Lawless's character opens the religious issues of the Cylons to betrayal and revenge.

Eick describes the plotline as "a Cylon having a crisis of faith, and that crisis leads her character to a place where she becomes susceptible to betrayal by other Cylons. Her crisis leads to an over-correction that turns her into a Cylon heretic. That's all weird and interesting and very religious, and it adds a certain textured approach to the Cylons."

Battlestar Galactica has been so successful that a prequel spin-off, titled Caprica, is now in development. Caprica will tell the story of events some 50 years before the attack and will differ stylistically from Galactica. The new show will be, "much more romantic, and much more of a soap, [dealing] with a corporation and the man in charge of that corporation who in a very innocent and idealized way propagated the artificial intelligence technology that would later become [unbeknownst to him and those involved in the series] the Cylons," Eick said.

Both Galactica and Caprica will be on SCI FI Channel because, "They said, 'We'll buy it ... go write it.' So that is what we are doing."

Mischa Barton's 'O.C.' Character Killed

Mischa Barton's 'O.C.' Character Killed
May 18, 9:47 PM EST

The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- Fox's "The O.C." closed its third season Thursday with a deadly twist. Marissa Cooper, played by Mischa Barton, was killed in a car crash.

Barton's character was central to the show, which follows four wealthy Newport Beach teens through the emotional ups and downs of high-school life.

Barton was already a familiar face when she began starring on "The O.C." in 2003. She worked as a model and appeared in several films, including "The Sixth Sense," and TV's "Once and Again."

Rumors flew in recent months that she was ready to leave "The O.C."

Earlier this week, Barton told "Access Hollywood," "My character has been through so, so much and there's really nothing more left for her to do."

Barton, 20, has a film arriving in 2007, "Guilty Pleasures," and other projects in the works.

Marissa's death came at the end of an otherwise upbeat episode.

The class of 2006, which includes Marissa, Ryan, Seth and Summer, graduated from Harbor High School. Seth and Summer were accepted by the same college. Ryan was reunited with his mother, who gave him a Land Cruiser as a graduation gift. Marissa's mom gave her a pearl necklace, while her dad gave her an opportunity to work with him on a yacht set to sail around the Greek islands.

Ryan was taking Marissa to the airport in his new SUV when they were antagonized at high speed by a drunken and vengeful Volchok, who they both had a history with. Volchok swigged from a flask as he chased the pair in his car.

Ryan lost control of the Land Cruiser and crashed, the vehicle rolling off the road. He pulled Marissa from the wreckage just before the vehicle caught fire.

There, on the side of the road, she died in his arms.

BSG Season 3 episodes revealed!

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA NEWS
Second and third episode titles revealed
TUESDAY - APRIL 25, 2006

The titles for two new episodes of Battlestar Galactica's upcoming third season have been uncovered. The season premiere, "Occupation," will be followed by "Precipice," according to a report on radio show Subject2Discussion.

Beware of some spoilers below! (highlight to reveal)

The show's April 11 edition also revealed spoilers for the early part of the upcoming season, including at least one significant character death.

Today GateWorld has learned that the third episode of the season will be titled "Exodus." While no details are yet known about the episode's plot, the title obviously implies that the Colonial survivors may be evacuating New Caprica as early as the third episode of the season.

The show's writers have previously indicated in interviews that the story arc on the Cylon-occupied planet may last as many as five episodes.

The new season of Battlestar Galactica premieres this October on The SCI FI Channel in the U.S.!

BSG cast didn't know about "Caprica" spin off!

Galactica Cast Was in the Dark About 'Caprica'
Fri 28th Apr

Source: MediaBLvd Magazine

Grace Park says that the cast of Battlestar Galactica didn't know that the spinoff prequel Caprica was in the works until Wednesday, the same day the rest of the world first heard about it. She received a call from her manager, who read about it in Variety. Trish Helfer also sent an email out to the cast, which was the first that most of the rest heard about the show being developed.

Grace said this in an interview Thursday with MediaBlvd Magazine, which will be published next week both in the Magazine, and on the Battlestar Galactica fan site, bsgtns.com.

Grace mentions many other interesting facts about season 3. Another tidbit she mentioned; on the set, the 7 Cylon's revealed so far are referred to as the Significant Seven. The 5 as of yet unrevealed models are referred to as the Final Five. The "Five" unrevealed models are so secret, that even the other Cylons are programmed to not think about them, and don't know what they look like or what they are doing.

Look for the full article, along with the podcast of the interview next week in MediaBlvd Magazine.

New Beginnings for BSG

from E! Online (April 26)

New Beginning for "Battlestar" By Josh Grossberg
April 27, 2006

Do you ever wonder what happened before a certain ragtag fugitive fleet set off on its lonely quest?

Well, Battlestar Galactica fans, does the Sci Fi Channel have a treat for you.

The Viacom-owned cable network has unveiled plans for Caprica, a prequel to the cable network's update of the '70s sci-fi. The spinoff series will apparently be set about 50 years before Battlestar Galactica and centering on the cataclysmic events that inform the current series.

Sci Fi Channel execs announced Caprica Wednesday in New York during the net's upfront presentation, when broadcasters traditionally pitch their most buzz-worthy new shows to advertisers and journalists.

Caprica is being developed and executive-produced by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, the duo responsible for re-engineering the 1978 Battlestar (masterminded by TV veteran Glen L. Larson) first into a smash 2003 miniseries and then a full-fledged series that's garnered a massive cult following and just won a Peabody Award.

Just as the 1970s Battlestar Galactica took its inspiration from (or, as some would say, "ripped off") George Lucas' first Star Wars, the new series will take a page from the latter-day Jedi tales and focus on the bad guys' rise to power.

Details are still sketchy, but Caprica will presumably detail how robotic Cylon Alliance rose to power and decimated the 12 Colonies of Kobol (Caprica is the name of the largest planet in the system). The wanton destruction forced a group of refugees to launch the interstellar colonial spaceship the Galactica into deep space in search of a mythical planet known as Earth.

Producers have tapped 24 scribe Remi Aubuchon to write the script.

No premiere date has been announced, but given the popularity of the updated Battlestar, starring Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell and Katee Sackhoff as a female Starbuck, you can bet the suits at Sci Fi will try and get it on air next season.

During Wednesday's upfront announcement, the cable net also showcased a slew of other projects in the pipeline.

Among them is Persons Unknown, a mystery thriller from Usual Suspects screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie; Blink, a paranormal series executive produced by Will & Grace's Eric McCormack about a group of ghostly gumshoes who intervene in the lives of people about to make a fatal decision; The Bishop, an hourlong drama written and exec produced by Freddie Prinze Jr. and Conrad Jackson about a Gen X slacker with a supernatural gift; and Snap, a suspense series centering around an Internet conspiracy from Lost producer Jesse Alexander.

Sci Fi has also given the go-ahead to two miniseries for next year: the six-hour Chariots of God, based on the bestseller by Erich von Daniken; and Motel Man, an eight-hour series about a police detectives who discovers seemingly commonplace items imbued wtih supernatural powers.

The cable channel is also working on Destination Truth, a reality series that will try to unlock some of the world's great mysteries.

Finally, Sci Fi is going broadband, offering up Pulse, a new multiplatform initiative that will feature Webisodes of Battlestar Galactica and other prime-time series as well as serving as a vehicle to test show pilots online.

Update (4/28)

SCI FI Wire gave the official word on its BSG prequel, Caprica.
Thu 27th Apr

Source: SciFi Wire

SCI FI Channel announced the development of Caprica, a spinoff prequel of its hit Battlestar Galactica, in presentations to advertisers in New York on April 26. Caprica would come from Galactica executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, writer Remi Aubuchon (24) and NBC Universal Television Studio.

Caprica would take place more than half a century before the events that play out in Battlestar Galactica. The people of the Twelve Colonies are at peace and living in a society not unlike our own, but where high-technology has changed the lives of virtually everyone for the better.

But a startling breakthrough in robotics is about to occur, one that will bring to life the age-old dream of marrying artificial intelligence with a mechanical body to create the first living robot: a Cylon. Following the lives of two families, the Graystones and the Adamas (the family of William Adama, who will one day become the commander of the Battlestar Galactica), Caprica will weave together corporate intrigue, techno-action and sexual politics into television's first science fiction family saga, the channel announced.

SCI FI announces Galactica spin-off!
Thu 27th Apr

Source: Gateworld

By the Lords of Kobol ... The SCI FI Channel has stunned fans today with the announcement of Caprica, a spin-off series from its top-rated Battlestar Galatica. SCI FI calls the potential new show "television's first science fiction family saga," centering on the history of the Adama family and the birth of the Cylons.

Set more than 50 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica, Caprica takes place on the capital world of the Twelve Colonies. There humankind thrives, living in a peaceful society with the benefits of high technology. But the development of an advanced, robotic, artificial life form is about to change everything.

The show is in development by Galactica executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, 24 writer Remi Aubuchon, and NBC Universal Television Studio.

Here is the network's own description of the series:

The people of the Twelve Colonies are at peace and living in a society not unlike our own, but where high-technology has changed the lives of virtually everyone for the better. But a startling breakthrough in robotics is about to occur, one that will bring to life the age-old dream of marrying artificial intelligence with a mechanical body to create the first living robot -- a Cylon. Following the lives of two families, the Graystones and the Adamas (the family of William Adama, who will one day become the commander of the Battlestar Galactica) Caprica weaves corporate intrigue, techno-action and sexual politics into television's first science fiction family saga.

The announcement comes as part of SCI FI's development slate of original scripted series, mini-series, reality shows, and new late-night programming, with no word on when Caprica might go into production or premiere on the cable channel. The development slate is a long-look ahead at what the network has planned and likely not a formal pick-up of the show -- and some series, for one reason or another, never see the light of day.

If the show receives an order to go into production, certainly don't expect to see it air this year.

Count on GateWorld to continue to follow developments as they happen. The third season of Battlestar Galactica premieres this October on SCI FI.

Is Ana Lucia a goner??

Another coworker send this to me ....

Is Michelle Rodriguez 'Lost'?

Internet rumors are swirling that the two stars of "Lost" who’ve had DUIs over in Hawaii are not long for that world. By that world, I mean whatever place the people of “Lost” are inhabiting.

Michelle Rodriguez, who plays the feisty Ana Lucia, is said to be leaving the show at the end of the season. It’s hard to believe, since characters that "die" are presumably being released from purgatory into heaven (or something like that). Ana Lucia, I think, would be going to hell for killing Shannon.

But who knows? One thing’s for certain, Rodriguez — who got her start so brilliantly in “Girlfight” — has not had an easy time of it on the set of “Lost”…

And still there’s another rumor that Cynthia Watros, who plays Libby, is leaving for a CBS sitcom with Tom Cavanagh. What’s really strange about this is that Cavanagh just bombed in the god-awful “Love Monkey.” Shouldn’t there be an appropriate period of mourning — like a couple of seasons? Anyway, Watros also had a Hawaiian DUI this year.

What no one says about “Lost,” and what seems more pressing, is that its nominal “star” Matthew Fox is off to shoot a big feature film this spring during the show’s hiatus. “We Are... Marshall” is directed by videomaker McG, who lensed “Charlie’s Angels.”

Fox co-stars with Matthew McConaughey, Anthony Mackie, Ian McShane and David Straitharn. He follows “We Are… Marshall” with “Vantage Point,” at which point, if he gets good buzz off the shoots, FOX will start agitating to leave “Lost” himself.

And that’s when Lost becomes a five-season show, with the fifth season being all about looking for Fox’s character. This happened to another Fox a long time ago — Fox Mulder, from "The X Files," when David Duchovny left for his big film career.

New Lost clues from Mr. Suzuki

my former coworker just sent this to me ...

Hey H,

I think this is a big big lost clue. I found it linked to one of the many ABC/Lost Sites. Note the faded Bunker Map in the background.

I've felt that time travel had something to do with the LOST story. There have been other hints too. Although this picture is hard to understand, at least the equations are, but the big clue is there.

...Ed.

PS..be sure to say hi to Samurai Princess for me! ;-)

04/17 - The survivors of Oceanic flight 815 have been locked in a test of faith ever since they crashed on the island. This is the dilemma that plagues the island survivors and also defines their character. Discover how faith in the hatch led Locke on a mission to find a way inside, and how his discovery of Desmond led to his belief that punching in the numbers every 108 minutes would ensure everyone's survival. In addition, Michael's dogged mission in finding Walt, the tailies fight for survival during their first 48 days through their collision with the fuselage survivors, the uncertainty of prisoner Henry Gale's allegiances, and tensions between the survivors and "The Others" have left everyone questioning what they believe in. Additionally, the healing powers of love are explored through a timid Hurley's struggle with asking Libby out on a date, through the strong bond between Sun and Jin, and through Jack and Sawyer's mutual - yet unrequited - attractions to Kate. "I mean, it plays huge in the finale, and even in episodes 21 through 24. Twenty-one is an episode that is very much on the sort of fundamental axis of that map, and it's a Locke and Eko story, which is going to be awesome. [Executive Producer] Carlton [Cuse] and I wrote it. That episode is just called '?' because that is the symbol Locke remembers from the map." Source: Kristin on E!Online
03/23 - Claire (and possibly another Lostaway)-centric, featuring Charlotte a 16ish Australian who suffers a near death experience. Source: SecretAgentMan at TWoP [Note: It seems that it may not be Claire-centric but that she will appear in the flashback.]

Airdate: May 17, 2006

04/12 - Michael will be getting a flashback episode on May 17, during which we'll learn what, um, Others stuff he's been up to these last couple of months. Whatever it is he's been doing, I understand we'll meet a very different Michael than the one we left. Walt will also be back, and yes, he'll still be played by Malcolm David Kelley. I'm also hearing that [the] episode contains a great scene between Jack and Sawyer. Even better than the poker stuff. Source: Ask Ausiello @ TV Guide
03/30 - Guest star is 'Mrs Klugh', a smart, interesting, edgy, powerful businesswoman in her early 40's. Source: SecretAgentMan at TWoP

Episode 2.23: Live Together, Die Alone (2-hour season finale) (Desmond-centric)
Airdate: May 24, 2006 from 9 to 11 p.m.

04/19 - The two-hour finale is basically one big Desmond flashback. Source: Ask Ausiello @ TV Guide
04/18 - [Quite spoilery, highlight at your own risk... In flashback that is set in 2000 in L.A., Libby buys Desmond coffee and offers him her boat. Charlie and Eko enter the hatch to get dynamite. Rose and Locke have a chat. Later in the episode, we see Desmond lying on the beach shore, waking up, being carried to the hatch, and Desmond and Kelvin walking through the jungle. While in prison (not sure if it's on island or flashback), Widmore tells Desmond off. There will be one scene of Desmond in the stadium. 04/05 - We'll see Vincent in the finale. Source: Ask Ausiello @ TV Guide

General Season 2 spoilers:

04/19 - Per the Hollywood Reporter, Cynthia Watros, aka Lost's Libby, has been tapped to join Tom Cavanagh on the CBS comedy pilot My Ex-Life, calling into question the fate of Hurley's little gal pal (although her Ex-Life role is said to be just a "guest-starring" one). Source: TV Guide Online [Note: Sources tell us that Libby will not return next season.]
04/18 - It might look as though Kate and Jack are zooming toward coupledom, but there's a serious wrench by the end of the season! [Also later this season,] there will be two deaths. Source: Kristin on E!Online

"Grey's Anatomy" update

Along with the spoilers for the "GA" posted earlier; I read that "Dr. McSteam" is signed for eight episodes. It could be that Mrs Dr. McDreamy (Addison) might be tempted again and she could leave with Dr. McSteam if McDreamy decides to divorce her.

Also, Meredith might be wishing she kept her doggie since she laid eyes on the new Vet (Chris O'Donnell).

"Lost" update

Well on May 17th episode, we'll find out what happened to Michael (Harrold Perrineau) after he went looking for Walt. Michael will get his own POV / Flashback on that episode.

FYI, the season two 2hr finale is on May 24th.

"24" News

Kiefer Sutherland is coming back for three more Season (I guess he's gonna have three more "bad" days).

Also, Mary Lynn Rajskub (Choe) is probably not dying this season since she signed to return next season.

Everyone else, who knows but "Audrey" is set to be in a new series this Fall. Will Jack be losing another loved one?

In addition, Michael's dogged mission in finding Walt, the tailies fight for survival during their first 48 days through their collision with the fuselage survivors, the uncertainty of prisoner Henry Gale's allegiances, and tensions between the survivors and "The Others" have left everyone questioning what they believe in. Additionally, the healing powers of love are explored through a timid Hurley's struggle with asking Libby out on a date, through the strong bond between Sun and Jin, and through Jack and Sawyer's mutual - yet unrequited - attractions to Kate. Hints of BSG Season 3 / 1st Episode Season 3

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA NEWS

Thompson reveals Season Three plans

MONDAY - APRIL 10, 2006

by Livi Dolgin

In a recent interview with IF Magazine, Battlestar Galactica writer and producer Bradley Thompson speculated on plotlines and love interests for the show's upcoming third season.

Beware of spoilers for the end of Season Two.

"It's more of a season-by-season mission statement of Ron [Moore, executive producer] saying where he wants people to go," he said. "Before we've rolled anything we've thought about and broken the shows for eight episodes. For example, eight stories already exist for Season Three."

The Season Two cliffhanger left the humans trying to build a colony. "Part of what Ron wanted to do by jumping a year ahead, besides not wanting to do a western town like Joss Whedon did in Firefly, was a chance to reconfigure characters," Thompson said.

So will Katie Sackhoff ("Kara Thrace") get a Cylon lover?

"Katee should be careful what she asks for!" Thompson said. "We don't really predict when we are going to pull out a Cylon to show somebody. It just seems that they just show up. We don't decide to unmask two Cylons a season or anything like that. Ron was writing 'Lay Down Your Burdens, Part 1' and all of a sudden Brother Cavil (Dean Stockwell) appeared to him and said it's time!"

And what about the Cylon-human hybrid baby?

"Let's say we're not going to drop the baby all together, because we set it up and it means a lot to the Cylons," he said. "But the baby is only about a year and a half old when we get into Season Three, so it's probably not going to be walking on water yet."

Thompson also spoke to the future of the Cylons. "It's like evolution in the real world," he said. "We'll just see what happens. We have talked about the Cylons having the ability to replace existing humans, but it has always been rejected. ... They won't be our good buddies for very long."

"Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell) has a destiny, and the scriptures of Kobol predict it," Thompson said. Does that mean she'll regain the presidency? "But we don't know if she's the leader. All of these things will be answered fairly rapidly in the first three or four weeks in October."

Read the entire, two-part interview for more spoilers -- and find out about the acting class Thompson took way back in the '70s with Richard Hatch ("Tom Zarek") -- and how the actors influence their characters, as well as how Lucy Lawless ("D'Anna Biers") came to join the show. The interview is online at IF Magazine.

Battlestar Galactica will return to The SCI FI Channel with all-new episodes in October.

Spoilers on 1st Season Three episode : "Occupation" in Inviso-Text

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA NEWS
First details on Season Three premiere
MONDAY - APRIL 10, 2006

GateWorld has uncovered the first plot details from "Occupation," the third season premiere of Battlestar Galactica!

Beware of spoilers in the report below.

D'Anna Biers (Lucy Lawless) enters an Oracles tent to visit Selloi Dedona, a frail old woman who is not well. She knows who D'Anna is, and what she is -- a Cylon, "Number Three." But D'Anna herself is not sure why she has come here. The Oracle chews on a handful of chamalla leaves (the planet from which the drug that Laura Roslin once took comes).

Meanwhile, inside the Cylon Planning Ministry, Ellen Tigh is "frakking" an unknown partner. Elsewhere, Tyrol and Anders are a part of a new human resistance movement on New Caprica. They plant a bomb, and attempt to remote detonate it when a Cylon heavy cruiser filled with humanoid Cylons draws near. The device fails at first but later detonates, giving the resistance a much-needed victory.

Laura Roslin remains a school teacher on the planet's surface. Inside her school, she and her former assistant Tory examine several hastily-taken photographs, trying to identify the members of a police force -- possibly humans who are now collaborating with the Cylon occupiers. They await the return of Adama and the Battlestar Galactica.

Saul Tigh, meanwhile, is being held against his will in a Cylon detention facility. Brother Cavil is there, and indicates to him that Tigh may be there a while.

Back in the Oracle's tent, Selloi tells D'Anna that the Cylon has lost her faith -- she not only does not believe in the Colonial pantheon, but not in her own god either. She knows about the dreams that D'Anna has been having, and claims that she is a messenger from God -- just as her dreams are. D'Anna shares the same flaw as the legendary Medusa, she says, and it will lead to her downfall.

Selloi delivers her message to the Cylon: The hybrid child of Sharon Valerii and Karl Agathon is alive. Her name is Hera, and she is alive.

"Occupation" begins filming in Vancouver, B.C. this month, and will premiere on The SCI FI Channel in the U.S. in October. Stick with GateWorld for the latest, and take a peek at the new and expanded Season Three episode guide!
